Athel Enterprises Limited is a Kenya-based social enterprise founded in 2019 that provides clean energy and sustainable cooking solutions across Africa. The company develops and distributes solar-powered technologies, including its flagship EcoMpishi Solar Electric Cooker, which combines solar energy, battery storage, and clean cooking to offer an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional methods. By addressing challenges such as energy poverty, deforestation, and health risks from indoor pollution, Athel Enterprises has already impacted over 1.2 million people, primarily in East Africa, and is expanding across the continent with a goal of reaching 10 million households by 2030 through localized manufacturing, strategic partnerships, and Pay-As-You-Go financing models.
Founded in 2019 by Robert Nguma, Athel Enterprises emerged from a World Bank-funded innovation initiative in Kwale County. The goal was to develop a practical solution to Kenya’s clean cooking crisis, which led to the creation of the EcoMpishi Solar Cooker. Today, the company operates a manufacturing facility in Mombasa and is expanding through regional assembly and distribution hubs in cities such as Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Lagos, Johannesburg, Dakar, and Accra. Plans are underway to localize production in key African markets to reduce costs, comply with AfCFTA regulations, and create employment opportunities.
